Is Tencent’s Light of Motiram Too Close to Sony’s Horizon for Comfort?

Tencent's upcoming title, Light of Motiram, developed by its Shanghai-based subsidiary Polaris Quest, is under scrutiny for allegedly imitating elements from Sony’s acclaimed Horizon series. The open-world survival game, described as a blend of nature and technology, has drawn attention primarily due to its visual and thematic resemblance to Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. The game’s promotional materials, including teaser videos and screenshots, feature a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by robotic creatures, with a central female character armed with a bow—elements that bear a striking similarity to the Horizon games.

“Rebuild a new civilization and battle, befriend, and raise various mechanimals alone or with friends in a sprawling hostile world,” reads the game’s description.

IGN has reached out to both Tencent and Sony for comments.

However, Horizon isn't the only comparison being made. Due to its survival mechanics, resource gathering, and the ability to tame robotic animals, many players have also likened Light of Motiram to Palworld, a game that faced its own controversy for allegedly copying Pokémon. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed a lawsuit against Palworld developer Pocketpair, citing patent infringement—legal action that Pocketpair has vowed to contest.

Online reactions reflect mixed sentiments. One Steam user commented, “Can I be the first to say it?? This is Palworld all over again.” Another user noted, “This feels even more blatant than Palworld.” On social media, reactions range from humor to criticism, with one X (formerly Twitter) user sarcastically referring to Light of Motiram as “Horizon 3—let’s go!” and others calling it a “disgusting rip-off.”

Sony's Horizon

Beyond Horizon and Palworld, comparisons have been drawn to Monster Hunter and other games with similar aesthetics and mechanics. The key question now is whether Sony will take legal action, especially since Guerrilla Games, the studio behind Horizon, is reportedly developing its own multiplayer title.

Set for release on PC and mobile in 2025, Light of Motiram will be a free-to-play game supporting solo play and multiplayer sessions of up to ten players, with full cross-platform compatibility. Whether it will launch smoothly or face legal hurdles remains to be seen.
